Jaeyoung Choi/ Writing Experience/ Thursday 1-3pm

The first time I ever wrote a complete essay, as far as I can remember, was in my seventh grade. I remember that it was a requirement in my SAT academy, for them to be able to see my English level and writing skills. At school, even though they would teach me grammar, we would learn more in detail about presentation skills. It was until I came to college that I was able to learn more in depth the structures in which an essay should be assembled. We were taught a specific structure in which an essay should be written and since then I follow the given structure.

In comparison to the way that I wrote in my SAT exams, it can be said that I was an immature and stubborn child. I would literally only write my opinion in the first four paragraphs and finish up by making all my thoughts into a statement, and that would be it. Sometimes trying to make up four paragraphs would be too difficult that I would just write what I could. I did not receive the score I once aimed for, but the good thing was that I didn't even need the SAT score to be able to go to college because the answer of my life was Korea.

Now, I know that five sentences make a paragraph, in which includes one topic sentence and four supportive sentences. Also, five paragraphs make one essay, and it is structured with the first paragraph being the introduction containing the thesis statement, the second third and fourth being supporting paragraphs and the last one the conclusion. Since I haven't had an astonishing experience with writing, I do not find it boring, actually I would really like to improve my writing skills to someday become a freewheeling translator.

  1. It's good that you don't find writing boring although you were almost 'trained' in writing for SAT! Your experiences in school seems quite different from mine, as you were more taught in presentation skills and I envy you for that. Hope you keep up your writing, any kind of writing; writing doesn't always have to be an organized essay!

  2. For me, it was also in university that I got to learn how to write with proper structures! I'm glad that you came to Korea to study; I'm happy that we're classmates. The last paragraph you have written helped me refresh my memories from what we've learnt last year! I hope we both get to improve our writing skills through this course :)
